In the mid-1960s, General Dynamics knew its F1-11 Fighter Bomber program was in trouble when the wings fell off their prototype model. So they called in 30-year-old Tom English to take a look at things. His problem solving skills quickly earned him the respect of his colleagues and a personal thank-you from President Lyndon B. Johnson.~

After several successful years in top secret reconnaissance programs, something happened that changed Tom’s life forever. On April 22, 1970, while listening to the radio on his way to work, Tom heard of plans for a local Earth Day observance. News of the event sparked his curiosity, and he decided to take the day off. But after two hours of searching for the event, Tom finally gave up and went to the beach instead. Dolphins and whales swam in the water just offshore, and Tom drifted into sleep.~

He dreamed he was an old man with deep wrinkles in his face, speaking with his two great grandchildren. "What did you do with your life?" they asked. He told them about the F1-11, but they didn't seem very interested, so he mentioned the nuclear-powered rocket he had designed to carry men to Mars. They were still bored, so he asked, "What is it that interests you?"~

They replied, "When we drink water, it makes us sick. And the air is so bad that we have to wear oxygen masks when we go outside. What did you do about these problems when you were young?"~

Tom began to cry, and woke up with a start. A few months later he stopped working for the military and returned to graduate school to pursue a degree in Environmental Engineering. Upon receiving his Masters, Tom spent five years working for the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, studying air quality and implementing federal standards. His belief that there was no safe way to dispose of high-level nuclear waste was heresy at first, but within six months it had become conventional wisdom.~

Since then, Tom has worked with the American Lung Association, directed environmental programs for the Santa Clara Valley Manufacturers Group, and served on the boards of several local environmental groups. Now retired,” Tom has given more than 500 speeches about endangered species and the importance of biodiversity.~
